Hellebore info:
A true botanical illustration, showing all aspects of the plant and relevant dissections.
Helleborus × hybridus ‘Reanna’s Ruby’ This beautiful Hellebore grows in my garden each year, appearing in the depths of Winter. It is often called the 'Christmas Rose' or 'Lenten Rose' and the variety I chose a few years ago has the most beautiful ruby-coloured blooms, fading to a lime green.
I really put a lot of effort into the composition, so you will see that the negative space is as important as the positive. I have aimed to reveal all stages of growth, from the new shoot in graphite, buds, opening blooms and full blooms that have reached their peak.
The plant provides a multitude of colours, from the opalescent shiny underside of the leaves in pinks, browns and dark greens, to the mottled leaves and stems (and the details on this single leaf took many many hours to capture!)
The filaments and anthers were very tricky within each bloom but I felt the effort of replicating botanical detail as closely as possible is imperative to understanding the Hellebore fully.
The notations for the dissections and enlargements are as follows:
a) Inferior ovary, style (pistil comprising of carpels) and stigma
b) New shoot enlargement
c) Half flower (longitudal dissection)
d) Half flower bud (longitudal dissection)
I can imagine this print as a wonderful wedding gift to someone who loves flowers. Perhaps it could be a cheerful print for a chic business, florist, keen gardener, or reside on the walls of a manor house. The work could fit well in the dining room, living area or study, hopefully giving light and colour to someone's day! Most importantly, I hope this Hellebore print gives the recipient as much joy as the process of being able to paint it.
For this piece, I have chosen the highest quality archival Hahnemühle Cotton Rag Giclée. These thick, smooth papers last for 80 years+, have a fantastic colour quality that I find replicates the original details to such an extent, it would be difficult to separate them.
